“Working with old, untreated shagreen skins is challenging. From the cleaning of the skins to the final touch, the process demands a lot of hours and range of skills and techniques to produce a final piece that brings out the skins as they should be highlighted.”
Shagreen
Shagreen is a trade name given to common stingray's skins, Dasyatis pastinaca. Shagreen has been used in decorative objects since centuries and saw a peak period in the eighteenth century. Shagreen had a resurgence in the beginning of the twenteth century, especially during the Art Deco period as a material of choice for luxury and modern decorative objects.
The works produced by Maison Delletery involve old and sometimes new shagreen skins, beginning with always untreated, untanned natural skins. Colors may be applied during production to achieve the esthetics necessary to the piece.

Quality
Working with natural materials like woods and old shagreen skins is challenging. During the lengthy and laborious production process, we keep a keen attention to details and quality.
Natural materials can experience expansions or shrinkages as they respond to climates and usages. We believe this adds characters to the objects. When necessary, we provide services to restore the desired esthetics back to the pieces.
